Obituary of Benton Reid Vernon Jr.

Benton Reid Vernon Jr. 80, of Ridgeland, MS. was called home to be with the Lord on August 18, 2017 in Jackson, MS. 

Benton was born in Shreveport, LA on December 7, 1936 to the late Scottie and Benton Vernon Sr. He grew up in Shreveport where he was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Byrd High School in 1955. After high school he attended The University of Oklahoma, where he met the love of his life Nancy Kennan. He was also a proud fraternity member of Sigma Nu.  Benton worked in the oil industry as a landman for many years after moving to Mississippi and later worked for University Medical in Jackson, MS until he retired in 2007.  He was an avid golfer who loved the O.U. Sooners and N.O. Saints. Most of all Benton was a great husband, father, and grandfather. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Scottie and Benton Vernon Sr. and sister, Mary Lowrey. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Kennan Vernon of Ridgeland, MS. Children, Scott Vernon of Shreveport, LA., Karen Sarubin (Ed) of Baltimore, MD., and Kris Steen (Steve) of Madison, Ms. Grandchildren, Stephanie Steen of Nashville, TN., Shelby Steen of Los Angeles, CA., Austin Sarubin and Samantha Sarubin of Baltimore, MD.

 A Family Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.  

In Lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to The Mustard Seed, Inc. 1085 Luckney Road Brandon, MS 39047, www.mustardseedinc.org or a charity of your choice.
