Dorothy Gilbert Thomas, age 91, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, in Flowood, Mississippi. She was born on March 3, 1933, in Crowville, Louisiana to Otis and Lillian Gilbert. Dorothy was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful servant of God.
Dorothy graduated from Benoit High School in Benoit, Mississippi, and dedicated her life to her family as a homemaker and professional seamstress. She turned many houses into homes across the world as she and her children accompanied her husband, Milton, during his military service. From Mississippi to Florida, Okinawa to Alabama, France to England, to Georgia, and finally back to Mississippi, Dorothy created warmth and stability for her family wherever they were stationed.
With a quiet spirit and soft-spoken nature, she expressed her love through the many beautiful handmade treasures and clothing items she created, sharing her remarkable skills in sewing, crocheting, knitting, and cross-stitching. Her beautiful works of art were a testament to the love and care she had for those around her. Dorothy loved and cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she would often travel to visit.
Dorothy’s unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her life. A dedicated Baptist, she read her devotional every day and never missed an opportunity to watch Charles Stanley on Sunday mornings. Her faith provided her with strength and guidance throughout her life.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Milton Richard Thomas; her daughters- Nancy Thomas and Sandra Thomas Friend; her parents- Otis E. Gilbert and Lillian McCaskill Gilbert; her siblings- Charlotte Pierce, Otis “Buster” Gilbert Jr., and Elmer Lee Gilbert; and her grandson, Christopher Haynes.
She is survived by her daughters- Vicki and husband, Blake Morgan and Lisa and husband, Mike Cumpton; her grandchildren- Angela and husband, John Gragson, Stacy and husband, Cam Auerswald, Michael Paul and wife, Lyndsay Cumpton, Mary Lauren Cumpton and husband, Sean Tillis, Travis and wife, Tiffany Friend, Tessie Hall Massey and husband, Logan Massey, and Joshua and wife, Ashley Burt, Ernest Milton Walker, and Vlad Thomas; and her great-grandchildren- Zoey Cumpton, Waylon Cumpton, Ella Auerswald, Charlie Gragson, Kayden Friend, Emma Friend, Sadie Massey, and Chrislee Mobley.
A memorial service honoring Dorothy’s life will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pinelake Church Reservoir Campus, located at 6071 MS-25, Brandon, MS 39047.
Dorothy’s gentle spirit, boundless love, and steadfast faith will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
