Obituary of Evelyn M. Houston
Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Evelyn Rebecca Moore Houston, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 31, 2025, in Ridgeland, Mississippi, at the age of 88.
Born on December 11, 1936, in the Hope Community of Neshoba County, Mississippi, Evelyn was the daughter of RB and Bernice Moore. She married the love of her life, Jimmy Houston, in June 1958, and together they built a life filled with love, faith, and dedication to family.
A devoted and longtime educator, Evelyn touched countless young lives throughout her teaching career, retiring from the Rankin County School District. Beyond the classroom, she faithfully served in her church communities, teaching Bible Drill to children, working with preschoolers, and supporting youth ministry. A founding member of Briarwood Drive Baptist Church, she had been a dedicated member of Oakdale Baptist Church in Brandon, MS, since 1981.
Evelyn’s life was centered on her faith. She loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart and often spoke of the day she would meet Him face to face. She lived out her faith daily, persevering through many challenges with grace and courage.
She found great joy in working in her vegetable garden and spending time with family and friends. Her love will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Houston; her daughter, Gwenice Houston; her parents, RB and Bernice Moore; and her brother, James Moore.
She is survived by her loving family: her sisters, Oneva Rowzee and Glenda Williamson; her brother, Reuben Moore; her daughters and sons-in-law, Annice and Mike McGuffey, Denice and Will Poe, and Karen and Clay Rogers. She was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren—Chris McGuffey, Ruth Poe White, Daniel McGuffey, James Poe, William Poe, David McGuffey, Alex Rogers, Wesley Rogers, and Sarah Rogers—as well as eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.
A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held on April 13, 2025, at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison, Mississippi.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Team Gleason Foundation (www.teamgleason.org), SBC International Mission Board (www.imb.org/generosity/give-now), or Gideons International (www.gideons.org/donate) in Evelyn's honor.
Her faith, strength, and love will never be forgotten, and her family finds peace in knowing she is now rejoicing in the presence of her Savior.
