Obituary of Kenneth Ray Stephens

Please share a memory of Kenneth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Kenneth (Kenny) Ray Stephens Kenneth Ray Stephens, 67, of Madison, MS entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Kenny fought a courageous battle after being diagnosed with a brain stem tumor in December 2000. He underwent numerous surgeries, treatments, and hospital stays over the last 24 years, and with the Lord’s hand, he never gave up or lost faith. A devoted son, husband, father, brother, and friend, Kenny’s greatest joy in life was found in the love he shared with those dearest to him. Kenny was known for his passion for sports and he was an exceptional athlete. Kenny went to Jim Hill High School in Jackson, MS where he played baseball, football, and was the team captain of the basketball team. He graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi in Photojournalism. His working career included marketing and advertising for McRae’s Department Stores, a salesman at Southern Duo-Fast, and management at U-Save Auto Rental, all in the Metro Jackson area. As an adult, Kenny played on church and competitive basketball and softball teams until his brain tumor surgery in 2001. Kenny was always ready to cheer on his favorite sports teams and share in the excitement of the games. His greatest pride, however, came from watching his sons play multiple sports throughout their school years, and then later in their high school coaching careers. He supported them wholeheartedly from the sidelines with the same enthusiasm and encouragement that defined his life. Kenny was a loyal fan of Southern Miss athletics and he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Golden Eagles. Outside of sports, Kenny found joy in music—especially the songs of Jimmy Buffett and rock and roll classics. This music brought him peace, joy, and plenty of sing-alongs with family and friends. His contagious laughter and quick sense of humor brightened every room he entered and left lasting smiles on the faces of those around him. Most importantly, Kenny lived a life anchored in his faith. His love for Jesus guided his every step and inspired those who had the privilege of knowing him. Kenny was a long-time member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, joy, and laughter that will be carried on by his family and friends. Kenny is preceded in death by his father, Harvey Stephens, and his mother, Marzelle Stephens, and his aunt Nell Thompson (Jefferson). Kenny is survived by his beloved wife Karen of 34 years, sons Scott Stephens and Kory Stephens (Beth), brother Mike Stephens (Christy), grandchildren Reese Stephens and Stone Stephens, nieces Kari Lynn Strength (Huston), Krista Stephens, uncle Larry Stephens (Faye) and a multitude of other family and friends. Our family is thankful for the prayers and the support we received throughout Kenny’s illness. We want to thank the numerous physicians, nurses, therapists, and caregivers (Rebecca and Lynell) over the years for their guidance, support, caring, and compassion throughout this journey. We also want to thank our friends who have been like family to us, and the staff of Broadmoor Baptist Church for their love and support. Visitation will be held for family and friends at Broadmoor Baptist Church Chapel, 1531 Highland Colony Parkway, Madison, MS on Saturday, September 13, 2025 from 9am to 11am with a memorial service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorials and donations can be made to Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital, Quiet Waters Ministry (PO Box 2247, Madison, MS 39130), or The Mustard Seed.
