Wanda Harris Fowler, 97, of Gunnison and Greenville, died on January 28, 2024, in Madison. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison on Friday, February 2, followed by a funeral service at 11:00. A graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. at Edgefield Cemetery near McCool, Mississippi. The first of five children, Wanda was born to Maggie Lee McAtee and Edward Harris in Skene, Mississippi on November 11th, 1926. During the Great Depression her father bought a cotton plantation at Gunnison where she drove tractors and helped care for her younger siblings. She graduated from Gunnison High School and attended Blue Mountain College where she was class treasurer, on the athletic board, and played tennis and basketball. Wanda married Ira Daniel “Cotton” Fowler on February 2, 1946, after he returned from serving four years in WWII. Wanda was very active in the Gunnison Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, served as President of the WMU and church Treasurer, arranged flowers for the altar, cleaned the church, and maintained the church grounds. Always very family oriented, Wanda often traveled to visit relatives and cemeteries to research her family’s genealogy. She used her genealogy research skills to help many Delta residents join the Mississippi Delta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in which she served as Registrar for several years and also as Chapter Regent. They owned grocery stores in Beulah and Benoit, a TV and appliance sales and service business in Rosedale, and later built and operated cable TV systems in Rosedale and Shaw. Wanda worked as the inventory manager and purchasing agent for Alabama Metal Products Company (AMPCO) located in Rosedale until she left to work full time as the salesperson, bookkeeper, and general office manager of their family businesses. Wanda and Cotton enjoyed hunting Indian artifacts all over the Mississippi Delta and playing cards with friends. When Cotton developed Parkinson’s Disease, Wanda was his primary caregiver for ten years. They moved to Greenville, and Wanda became active in the First Baptist Church of Greenville where she volunteered to keep the nursery for the mothers’ day out program and was substitute teacher for her Sunday school class. Wanda maintained the grounds of the Harris farm, home, and pecan orchard for many years. At 85 years young, she was still going to the Harris farm to bush-hog by herself no matter how hot it was. She was an enthusiastic collector of glassware, oddities, books, and antique furniture. Always wanting to be an artist, she finally began to develop her natural talent to paint, creating a number of paintings which are proudly hung in her family’s homes. She was preceded in death by her husband Ira D. “Cotton” Fowler in 2003; sisters Edeen Galbreath and Martha Baptiste; brothers Kenneth and Joe Frank Harris; and a grandson Jacob Daniel Fowler. Survivors include a daughter Delta F. Austin of Madison; a son Ira Daniel Fowler, Jr. of Brandon; four grandchildren Teresa A. Clayton of Madison, Danette A. Tannehill of Madison, Jessica F. Ferris of Auburn, Alabama; and John Fowler of Perdido Key, Florida; five step-grandchildren Katy Austin of Greenwood, Dr. Joe Austin of Vicksburg, Dr. Greg Austin of Madison, Beth A. Magee of Vicksburg, and Brad Camp of Oxford; seventeen great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
