Obituary of Richard "Dick" Lee Givan

Please share a memory of Richard "Dick" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard "Dick" Lee Givan, 87, of Madison, passed away on October 2, 2023, at his home in Madison and was surrounded by his family who had loved and cared for him during his illness. Dick was born on May 1, 1936, to Edward and Kathleen Cloyd Givan in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dick enlisted in the air force immediately after high school. He served 8 years during the Vietnam war, as a special reconnaissance operations weather meteorologist. He was assigned to special tactics squadrons of the USAF special operations command, trained to work in hostile territory and was stationed in French Morraco and Barksdale AFB. He met Yvonne while stationed at Barksdale and they later married and had 2 children, Ronnie and Cheryl. Dick spent much of his work career as a manager and supervisor of several different consumer finance organizations. He treated this more like a ministry than a job, counseling young people on their finances. He prepared taxes for his entire family and friends, for many years and when he retired, he volunteered with AARP during each tax season, preparing taxes for people for free. He was a numbers guy and always enjoyed helping people to manage their finances. He loved bowling on leagues, with his wife, camping and sports with his family and just spending time together, and he was always a handyman, fixer upper person for anyone in the family who needed it. He loved woodworking, building furniture, cabinets, crafts and toys. Each year he would make beautiful hardwood toys and donate them to toys for tots. He felt his greatest accomplishment in life was being a husband, parent, grandparent and great grandparent. Dick is survived by his loving spouse of 65 years, Yvonne Givan; daughter, Cheryl LaSource and her husband Bama of Madison, MS; granddaughters, Ashley Green and her husband Dustin of Fredericksburg, VA and Amber LaSource of Madison; grandson, Austin LaSource and his wife Lauren of Madison, MS; great grandchildren, Jaxson Green, Carson Green, and Olivia Green of Fredericksburg, VA, Beau LaSource and Lexie LaSource of Madison; and multiple nieces, nephews, and extended family that he loved dearly. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald "Ronnie" Lee Givan, brothers, Don Givan, Larry Givan, and Tom Givan; sister, Sharon Pritchett, and great grandson, Ryan Lee LaSource. Visitation will be held at Natchez Trace Funeral Home on Friday October 6, 2023, from 1:00pm until 2:00pm with a chapel service at 2:00pm. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to UMC Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital and/or Madison Children's Memorial Garden. Pallbearers are Bama LaSource, Austin LaSource, Dustin Green, Keith Givan, Cliff Mitchell, and Tommy Vise.
