Obituary of Debra Renee Potterfield

Debra Renee Potterfield (70), RN, CRRN, CCM, MSCC, Captain US Army Nurse Corps, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2023, surrounded by family and friends at her residence in Morgontown WV. She died from complications from a traumatic brain injury that she had years earlier. Debra was born in Hamilton Bermuda in 1953 and her family moved to upstate New York where she earned a degree in Nursing from the State University of New York. Debra eventually moved to Orlando Florida where she worked at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Always being adventurous she moved to New Delhi India with her husband and worked for the US State Department as the Embassy Nurse at the US Embassy in New Delhi. She ended up being the Ambassadors Nurse. Always looking for adventure she traveled to Guatemala to visit her husband, traveled to Muscat Oman to attend the Marine Corps Ball, went to visit Goa India with her daughter, she also traveled to England to visit her daughter at High Wycombe Boarding School. Upon return to the US Debra did not slow down. She earned the Certified Rehab Nurse Certification (CRRN) and worked at Gulfport Memorial Hospital. While in Gulfport she decided to join the Army Nurse Corps and attained the rank of Captain before she got out. Still determined to push ahead she earned a Certified Case Manager Certification and opened up her first company, Case Management Incorporated. She later sold the Company to Crawford and Company and became the Division Manager of the Gulfport Office. At the same time Debra opened up Renaissance Counseling Center in Long Beach MS. Debra then took a position as a Vice President at Hughes and Associates in Jackson MS. Then Debra started her own company Self Insured Solutions with business partner Stephanie Kilpatrick. After selling her portion of the company, Debra moved to North Topsail Beach in North Carolina where she was an Admissions Director at a Behavior Health Hospital. Debra then moved to Reno Nevada, and even lived for a while in Aquascalientes Mexico. Debra always loved the water, she bought a Hobbie Cat Sailboat in Orlando Florida and taught herself how to sail. She purchased multiple jet ski’s and a Bayliner Boat. She would spend hours in her backyard pool playing with granddaughter Natalie and grandson Stevie. Debra will truly be missed. She is preceded in death by her mother Barbara Mercer, her father Alan John, her sister Denise Mazzariello, her brothers Paul John and James John. She is survived by her husband of 39 years Douglas Potterfield, her three children Renee (Shelby) Johnson, Robert (Pamela) Balla and Barrett Potterfield, her grandchildren Natalie, Stevie, Ethan, Shelby Jr, and Ann Marie, her siblings Robert (Deborah) John of Florida, Scott (Melissa) of Florida, and William (Suzie) and Diane John. Debra’s family would also like to thank her caregiver Bille who became Debra’s best friend and without her help we wouldn’t have survived. Debra was no ordinary wife, mom, or grammy. She was fiercely protective and loving. Debra will be laid to rest at the Natchez Trace Cemetery in Madison MS. Services will be at 11AM on Dec 2nd at the Natchez Trace Funeral Home Chapel followed by a graveside service.
