Obituary of Mary Katherine Henderson
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Born on December 3, 1946 in Jackson, Mississippi, Mary Katherine Henderson, a loving
mother and cherished grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family
at the age of 77 years old.
Mary graduated from Murrah High School in 1965 and from Mississippi College in 1969
with a degree in Education. After graduation, she also attained her Masters and
Specialist degree in Education. She began her teaching career shortly thereafter and
taught all elementary grades throughout her 38 years teaching in Jackson Public
Schools as well as 7 years at Jackson Academy. Some of her most valuable, lifelong
friendships were formed with her fellow teachers, former students and parents of
students, which she cherished.
Mary is survived by her son, Ryan Henderson (Leanna) of Madison, MS. She was a
source of strength, guidance and wisdom throughout her life and they shared many
great memories together. Ryan was the light of Mary’s life until June 18, 2013 when her
only grandchild, Annie Katherine Henderson, was born. If there was one thing that could
make “Kat” retire, it was the opportunity to help take care of Annie during her childhood.
They loved laughing together, running errands, playing school and going fishing in the
neighborhood pond. Mary really loved watching Annie play soccer. “Kat” had a lasting
influence on Annie and will truly be missed.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents James Veachel Lawson and Lula Lawson.
Mary took great pride in the friendships she cultivated throughout her life. She was
always looking for ways to make her friends feel loved either by cooking for them,
buying them a thoughtful gift, taking them to doctor’s appointments, or planning a day
trip to one of her favorite Mississippi cities. She would beam with pride anytime she ran
into a former student which happened quite frequently given the number of students she
taught during her 45 year career.
Mary was known for her kindness, generosity and devotion to her family. She never
hesitated to help those in need. Mary leaves a lasting legacy of love and compassion to
her friends and family.
The Henderson family would like offer a special thanks to Mary’s personal caregivers,
Ina Anderson, Jeanette Johnson and Tracey Williamson, for the loving support and
devotion they gave to Mary during her illness. Thanks also to Pax hospice for their care
over the past few months.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 10-11 at Natchez Trace Funeral Home.
The funeral service will begin at 11:00 in the Natchez Trace Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will take
place immediately following the service at the Natchez Trace Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Webster Animal Shelter (525 Post Oak
Road, Madison, MS 39110), in honor of Mary’s memory.
