I’ve tried so many times to sit and write about Ryan; there are so many stories I could tell… and a lot that I can’t.
For as long as I can remember, my 2 big brothers have been larger than life to me. There are so many words I could use for Ryan: loving, loyal, kind, hardworking, funny… Ryan just had this way about him that was gloriously indescribable – but I’ll try.
He could make friends everywhere he went, easily connecting with people and leaving a lasting impression.
Ryan was a Marine – a member of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines India Company (ooh rah). Many of his Marine brothers have sent us messages and well-wishes, and all say the same thing about him – “great guy”, “great Marine”, “a real good dude” (you know men). More said he was “one who inspired many laughs and could usually bring some light to a gloomy situation with his unique sense of humor.” He was “one of the good ones”, described as “an amazing mentor & leader”, “even-keeled with a good head on his shoulders”, and someone that “would do anything for anyone.” Many of them “will never forget the way Ryan made them smile” – and I honestly don’t think anyone that met Ryan ever could.
Even now, I know Ryan can bring us humor – from his “pet” stuffed snake named “Rajah” when we were kids; to our coming home one day and finding Ryan setting the formal dining room table in a button-down & tie for no reason, other than to “dine” on the Sonic dinner we had brought home; to his “Grey Poupon” moment that I’ll save for my brother John to tell you about; to 4-year-old Ryan in the car on the way from bringing me home from the hospital saying “Dad, that SOB just cut you off!”… to his being chosen as a teen to dance with hula dancers on stage at a family luau in HI, and arguably loving every minute of it; to giggling at the beach with my brother John while they set off fireworks right beside each other’s heads…. To his listening and sitting with me the too-few times that I asked; to his being surprised with an impromptu photoshoot one holiday morning at my parents’ house while Mama set up a camera tripod, and of course his hamming up the moment with shot after shot… and so so many more.
My brother Ryan was simply one of a kind – the best kind.
I’ve said it already but… to know Ryan was to love him. At first, I realized that I could possibly be biased, but the outpouring of condolences, love and support – from people throughout his life: high school, Marines & beyond – just prove that it’s not the sentiment of a little sister. He was truly loved, and I will forever be proud to be “Hyde’s little sister”.
Rest easy, I love you brother.

I think Liz has already said it best when she said that “to know Ryan is to love him.” I’m foolishly going to try to add to that…
To put a twist on an old phrase, Ryan was a lover AND a fighter. He was strong, independent, kind, loving, courageous, and fiercely loyal. I think everyone here was blessed to have been touched by Ryan, and we’re here now to celebrate his life and share our memories.
Ryan had an amazing sense of humor. This story may be too dated for some of you here, but there was an old TV ad for Grey Poupon mustard, where 2 limos were side by side at a stoplight. One guy gestures for the other to roll down his window and asks in a formal British accent, “Pardon me. Would you have any Grey Poupon?” Well, when our car happened to pull up next to a limousine at a stoplight, you all can guess what happened next. 9-year-old Ryan Hyde does the same motion for the guy to roll down his window and asks in a great British accent, “Pardon me. Would you have any Grey Poupon?” Fearless…
Ryan was so outgoing and adventurous. I remember a trip that my dad took us on. We drove down from Kentucky to Atlanta to see a couple of Braves baseball games. Ryan was around 6 years old at the time. As we’re sitting there during the game, a concession guy was walking up and down the stairs doing his sales pitch: “Ice cold beer! Ice cold beer! Come on. Who wants to be the first guy to get an ice cold beer?” After a couple of minutes where no one said anything, Ryan answers up, “I’ll take one!” The entire section around us busts out laughing, even the beer guy. Ryan always made a great impression.
Ryan was a wonderful husband and father, not to mention a great brother. He will always hold a place in all of our hearts, and he will be greatly missed. I love you brother.

Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”
My favorite verse for years. I’ve had plenty of “whys” that were unanswered so I just come back to these words - trust and lean on Him to direct me.
Ryan came into this world a week or two early, and He’s left us way too early. But I have wonderful memories to cherish, as I know you do too.
Ryan was a character from the start. As a brand new first grader, his teacher called John and me to talk about “J. R.”, and we said, “Who’s J.R.?” Ryan had told her he was called JR. We just laughed and told her we called him Ryan.
Ryan always had friends, good buddies. His personality was one that as Liz said “to know Ryan was to love Ryan”. As a teenager, he gave John and me some sleepless nights. but as John has said, “A teenager’s job is to worry parents”. But he always was known for his loyalty and sense of humor.
Then the Marine Corps. He wrote letters, which I’m sure all recruits were “encouraged” to do. I’ve re-read them of course. He said the Marines had taught him discipline for life. He already had the loyalty and love for others.
He was one sharp Marine. Boot Camp. When graduation from boot camp came, we all went to Parris Island. His outward appearance was so fit, lean & mean, all muscle. He was so proud – as he should have been. Such an accomplishment. He did 2 tours in Iraq. He found lifelong friends. I’m sure Ryan recognized that life could be brief. So he loved fully.
Gwynne and Mackenzie. His loves.
Gwynne and Ryan met and that was it. Perfectly matched. Then came Mackenzie. Oh my goodness, what pride he had in his family. He wanted for them to have everything and he worked so hard to provide. Ryan loved you Gwynne & Mackenzie with all his heart.
He loved his family. He loved his friends. He would do anything for any of us.
Ryan was a wonderful, loving, kind man. We will love him always, remembering all our precious memories.
The last bible verse I love is from Psalms 73.
“Yet I am always with you. You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel and afterward you will take me into glory. God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

This is hilarious. Hyde bought an old Thunderbird in Hawaii and we ended up spending more time at the auto parts store than we did driving around in it. Finally thought it was good to go and it broke down right outside the back gate of the base and we pushed it back to the barracks. Semper Fi

I remember Hyde being a good guy and a good Marine. We did a hell of a thing in Iraq, and he did his job just like the rest of us. He never coward down in the face of serious situations. I’d serve with him at any time. -Tim
Hyde was a solid guy. He and I joined the fleet together, and I remember some of our experiences from back then. When you're new to the fleet, you're subject to some hazing from senior Marines. Hyde and I were roommates, and our leadership was going to conduct a gear inspection. We had a ridiculous amount of gear, and it all had to be displayed on our beds in a very specific and meticulous way.
One of our seniors told us to always lock our door if we left the room because gear would “disappear” if you didn’t maintain accountability of it. After painstakingly setting up all our gear, it was time for lunch chow, and we left the room without locking the door. Evidently, one of our seniors came by our unlocked room and flipped, dumped, and mixed all our gear. It was a huge mess, and we had to do it all over again. It’s funny now, but the Marine Corps can be unforgiving. It’s just a little part of it. -Mohr
I remember a story with Hyde. We had just finished a 30-day pre-deployment training at MCB 29 Palms called CAX, right before we deployed to Hadith, Iraq. We were riding in the back of a 7-ton truck late at night, heading back from our last training operation. We weren’t allowed to have any alcohol during the 30-day training. However, one of our seniors had snuck out to the liquor store and bought a bottle of bourbon.
Our senior surprised us by pulling out the bottle, cracking it open, and passing it around. We took it as a pat on the back for a job well done. It was one of those good little moments that you remember. It felt like a rite of passage as we gained more respect from our seniors. It was nice to feel a little more normal again.

I first met Ryan in October 2005. I was coming to Marine Corps Base Hawaii as my second duty station. I was a Corpsman or “Doc” to all the Marines. I arrived in India Company shortly after Ryan and all the other new Marines hit the fleet with India Co. I quickly took to Ryan and some of the other new Marines in 2nd Platoon because we all were new to India Company. Ryan and I got along great because he was always laid back and easy to get along with. He could always make the guys laugh. But most of all, he was a tough Marine, which is exactly what 2nd Platoon was made of, so Ryan fit right in. Most people outside of India Company don’t know this because we don’t often need to talk about it, but 2nd Platoon, and our squad in particular was the toughest squad in the whole Company and most likely the toughest in the Battalion. When in Iraq, our squad was tasked with some of the most grueling missions in our Area of Operation; Ryan and I held up the rear of our patrols whenever we would go out on missions. Ryan was tough! Whenever it was excruciatingly hot or conditions were unbearable (when they were quite often) Ryan would never complain. He let it roll off his shoulders and would encourage others to push on. He possessed leadership skills that led younger Marines to him naturally. I’ll never forget the time when on patrol we took fire from the enemy and Ryan took a round to his body armor. It was total chaos. It wasn’t until the dust settled and we began to push forward on the enemy that he said “Hey Doc! I think I got shot!” He was cool and collected, while I was frantically looking for bleeding. Sure enough, the round had hit the top corner of his SAPI plate (body armor). Just half an inch higher and the round would’ve entered his shoulder. In true Marine fashion, Ryan showed his grit and was ready to keep going to engage the enemy! Ryan was a true warrior; one that our platoon needed.
I often look back on those times spent with Ryan holding up the rear of the squad on all of our missions. Ryan was a great Marine and a truly great Man! I am so proud to have called him a friend. I will miss him dearly, but rest assured he will always be looking after his family and all of his Marine brothers who served with him.
You will be missed Brother!

I had the privilege of serving with PFC Hyde during our deployment in Haditha, Iraq, in 2006. This period was marked by intense conflict and instability, yet Hyde's unwavering commitment and bravery stood out. As part of 2nd Platoon, 3rd Squad, under the leadership of SGT Hornung, we faced numerous challenges together. I served as the 1st Team Leader and Assistant Squad Leader, while Hyde was in the 3rd Team under LCPL Clark. Our missions ranged from base security to combat patrols, and through it all, Hyde served with distinction.
One of the most memorable moments was during a particularly intense period when we were frequently engaged in firefights. On one occasion, while on patrol, we came under heavy fire. Hyde found himself caught in concertina wire, exposed to enemy fire. Despite the terrifying situation, he managed to free himself and continue fighting. His courage and determination were truly inspiring. He later told LCPL Clark that being hit in his body armor felt like a sledgehammer, but he never let it deter him from his duty.
Hyde's resilience and dedication were a source of strength for all of us. He faced every challenge with a positive attitude and a steadfast resolve. His actions not only protected his fellow Marines but also exemplified the core values of honor, courage, and commitment that define the Marine Corps.
As strange as it may sound, even in the midst of combat, we found ways to have fun and share a laugh. One of our favorite activities was taking photos and videos of our squad and editing them into motivational videos. These videos captured our brotherhood and camaraderie, and I have fond memories of watching them together. They served as a reminder of the bond we shared and the lighter moments that helped us get through the toughest days.
PFC Hyde's service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. He was a remarkable Marine and an even more remarkable person. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who served with him and in the stories we share about his bravery, dedication, and ability to find light in the darkest of times.

Here are a couple Marine stories about Hyde. I was his senior Marine, and he was in my team. We trained him and the other new guys before our deployment to Haditha, Iraq. At one point in Iraq, we took fire, and he was shot in his body armor as he was stuck in concertina wire and out in the open. It’s terrifying to be stuck in the open while being shot at. But he got off the ground and out of the wire and stayed in the fight. He did an outstanding job. He told me later that it felt like someone hit him with a sledgehammer. It didn’t seem to faze him too much. He was a hard charger. With our dark sense of humor and after the fact, it was hilarious seeing him stuck out in the open while being shot at. He and I had a good talk after that event.
We deployed again to Fallujah, but we were in different teams. After that deployment, Hyde and several other Marines gave me an engraved KA-BAR as I was leaving the Marines. I was honored by their gesture. The funny thing was, Hyde grabbed the KA-BAR and ran his thumb along the blade. I said, “Don’t do that, it’s sharp.” Well, it was too late as he cut himself and bled all over the sheath. I still have it in my office to this day. Once again with our dark sense of humor, we laughed at his ass bleeding on my gift.
On behalf of the Marines of 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines India Company, we send our deepest condolences to all family and friends.

My sincerest condolences go out to the entire Hyde family. I had the honor of serving with Hyde on my last two deployments in 2nd Platoon. Although he was one of our junior Marines, he always remained even-keeled and had a good head on his shoulders. Hyde would do absolutely anything for anyone. He’s gone way too soon. Until Valhalla—rest easy, brother.

We have So many memories of laughter and love with Ryan. We always had the best and weirdest conversations that could just go on so long our wife’s would have to end them. We shared a lot with each other’s family so much we became family. So many years ago we meet through friends and continued our friendship for so long it eventually became our children’s friendship. My heart hurts and my soul aches. I will forever cherish everything we shared and will always look after your family. I will scare the living crap out of any “dude” that your daughter thinks she will bring around. I will always be your friend and brother forever and ever. I love you Ryan Hyde!
