Obituary of Marvin Thomas Hughes
Please share a memory of Marvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marvin Thomas Phillip Hughes was the oldest of three children to Tom and Mary Hughes. He was born February 24, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. Following in the footsteps of his parents, Marvin also was a pillar of the Southwest Detroit neighborhood, in grade school, middle school and high school, being faithful to Saints Andrew & Benedict Elementary School and church becoming an alter boy during that era. He was very involved in community activities as well as church and school activities growing up.
As a graduate of Holy Redeemer High School, Marvin was known to be the ‘brains’ of his classes, especially mathematics. It was nothing for him to be in trigonometry classes, never having to study for his tests and only taking 10 minutes or less to complete those exams!
Once his parents retired and moved to Dad’s hometown of Mississippi, Marvin soon followed, leaving Detroit and moving to Jackson, Mississippi. Marvin was always known to be ahead of his time when it came to the working world. He was the ‘Bill Gates’ of the late 1970s, early 1980s, having the natural skills to know how to break down a computer and put them back together in less than an hour. Those tasks came extremely easy for Marvin, but he chose to live the rest of his life as a free-spirited, simplistic man.
Marvin was always a gentle, kind man, soft spoken and always helping others. Marvin was credited for helping save the lives of several people back in the earlier 2000s due to a fire which pretty much engulfed the entire rooming house he resided. Not one life was lost, thanks in part to Marvin’s swift actions.
Marvin passed away on December 3, 2024 in Jackson, Mississippi. He is now resting in the arms of our Heavenly father and reunited with his mother and father and family and friends! He is preceded in death by his father, Mr. Tom R. Hughes, his mother, Mrs. Mary Jane Crain Hughes, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his sister, Brenda J. Hughes, Marsha L. Hughes-Johnson, his nephews, David Marcus Hughes, Calvin D. Johnson and Jeremiah C. Johnson (Lashonda Smith) as well as his great-nephew, Jordan Lamar Smith-Johnson.
