A wife of noble character, who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.... She brings her husband good, not harm all the days of her life.... She is clothed with strength and dignity…She speaks with wisdom.... Her children will arise and call her blessed.... Charm is deceptive, and beauty fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. From Proverbs 31 Barbara Davis Rawls of Jackson, Mississippi, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away into the arms of her Lord Jesus on Friday, April 24, 2020. She was 90 years old. Reverend Charles W. Ashley, her son in law, officiated a small lovely family graveside service at the Natchez Trace Cemetery. She was laid to rest next to Gordin, her beloved husband of 56 years. They were active members of St. Luke’s Methodist Church of Jackson for over 50 years and were devoted to serving others and one another with a devotion that was a joy to behold! Born on September 18, 1929, in Montpelier, Mississippi, she was the second of four children of Ollie Reid Davis and George Herbert Davis. At age 10, she, along with her older sister Elizabeth, helped their mother by each picking a newly born twin brother to help with; Barbara (or “Bobbie” to those who knew her best) chose Grady and Elizabeth helped with Jerry. It was a sweet lifetime bond between siblings. After graduation from high school she met her sweetheart and future husband, Gordin Lucius Rawls, at a Sigma Chi party. They were married September 4, 1949. Barbara balanced a long career with Zurich Insurance with being a wife and mother of three. She genuinely enjoyed working, and was well organized. Every endeavor was so well done. If she entertained, there was a delicious meal. If she picked an outfit, it was beautiful. She had a sassy sense of style and grace. She was charming! She always encouraged others and was a great listener. Barbara was a giver to all. She shared her time, her talents, and her grace. She was lovable. Come by the house on any Saturday morning and there were fresh biscuits and jelly. There was always a Paw Paw cake under the cake holder. She loved and enjoyed her family most of all. Barbara and Gordin were blessed with seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She lived life to its fullest, never met a stranger, and always had a positive attitude and a beautiful smile. Her family has been gifted an amazing legacy and shown a lifetime of love. She was preceded in death by her husband Gordin Lucius Rawls in 2005, as well as both of her parents, Ollie Reid Davis and George Herbert Davis; her brother Jerry Davis, and her sister Elizabeth Cliett. Survivors include her brother Grady Davis (Peggy); her three children and their spouses, Ann Rawls Ashley (Charles) of Montgomery, AL, James H. Rawls (Gayla) of Ridgeland, MS, and Michael G. Rawls (Nancy) of Ridgeland, MS. Her grandchildren are Jennifer Tillman (Leonard), Angela Davidson (Stuart), Candice Boatright (David), Mark Rawls (Adrianne), Melanie Armour (Shane), Callie Duncan (Bud), and Jessica Kruger (Stephen). Barbara is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren: Sarah Ashley Tillman; Jay, Jack, and Jett Davidson; Daniel, Mark, and Reid Boatright; James and Jonathan Rawls; Michael, Charlotte, and Emily Armour; Will and Grant Duncan; and Hazie and awaited baby Kruger. We thank, with sincere gratitude and appreciation, the staff for the loving care she received at The Orchard and the Beau Ridge Memory Care Homes, both in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
