Obituary
Dr. Jerry W. Mixon entered heaven on April 26th, 2022 in Madison, MS. Jerry was a Southern Baptist minister, evangelist and a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson, MS.
Visitation is Friday, April 29th from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church Ridgeland, MS, and Saturday, April 30th at 10:00 A.M. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30th at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church Ridgeland, MS. The graveside service will follow at Natchez Trace Funeral Home, 759 Highway 51, Madison, MS
Born in Hattiesburg, MS to Earl and Hazle Mixon, Jerry was a graduate of Petal High School, William Carey University, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, licensed to preach in 1960, ordained as a minister in 1964. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree from William Carey University in 1975. He was inducted into the William Carey University Alumni Hall of Fame and Circle of Excellence in 2010, the Petal School District Academic Hall of Fame in 2013, and the William Carey University Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. He also received Outstanding Young Men of America and Marquis Who’s Who in Religion honors.
Jerry served in the United State Army from 1960 - 1963, stationed in Korea as assistant chaplain 1962-1963. He received the Expert Rifle medal. He also served in the Mississippi State Guard as a Chaplain from 2000-2019 receiving the ranking of Lieutenant Colonel.
Jerry served as pastor of Mars Hill Baptist Church, Hattiesburg, MS; Bluff Springs Baptist Church, Magnolia, MS; Boulevard Baptist Church, Pensacola, FL; Goss Baptist Church, Goss, MS; First Baptist Church, Winona, MS; First Baptist Church, Hot Springs, AR and Rocky Creek Baptist Church, Lucedale, MS.
He has also served as Transitional/Interim pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, Carthage, MS; First Baptist Church, Cleveland, MS; Center Terrace Baptist Church, Canton, MS; First Baptist Church, Columbus, MS; First Baptist Church, Newton, MS; First Baptist Church, Charleston, MS; Brandon Baptist Church, Brandon, MS; First Baptist Church, Richland, MS; First Baptist Church, Petal, MS; First Baptist Church, Ridgeland, MS; First Baptist Church, Lake, MS; Immanuel Baptist Church, Greenwood, MS; Raymond Road Baptist Church, Jackson, MS; First Baptist Church, Terry, MS and New Heights Baptist Church, Summit, MS.
After retiring from full-time pastorates, Jerry served as Director of Stewardship of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board for 12 years. He held various leadership positions in the Mississippi Baptist Convention and served as member, Recording Secretary, Vice President, First Vice President, and president for two terms. In the Arkansas Baptist Convention he was a member of the Operation Board/Program Board and Christian Action Commission.
He was a gifted writer and composer of 5 books, numerous songs, and poetry. He loved to entertain and to make people laugh. He was a well known speaker and humorist.
He married Victoria (Vicki) Beech in 1968 and they were blessed with two children - Jeff Mixon of Hattiesburg, MS and Lanay Mixon Lambert and son-in-law, Jerry Lambert of Canton, GA; two grandchildren - Landon Lambert and Luke Lambert of Canton, GA.
His family includes two brothers, Robert Mixon of Gulfport, MS and Joe (Laura) Mixon of New Boston, TX; two sisters, Sue Best Massey of Crosby, TX; and Pat Prine of Oak Grove, MS; numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, gifts or donations can be made to the Jerry and Vicki Mixon Endowed Scholarship Fund at William Carey University.
