Obituary of Charles Joseph Lee Turnage

Charles Joseph Lee Turnage, born January 4th, 1948, of Jackson, MS passed away peacefully at Hospice Ministries, Ridgeland, MS on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, from Congestive Heart Failure. He accepted Christ as a teen and then rededicated his life to his Savior Jesus Christ in 2019. A Memorial Service will be held at the Sonny Montgomery VA Hospital Chapel where Charlie worked faithfully for 25 years and retired in 2014. The Visitation will be Friday, May 13th, at 12-1pm with the Service to follow at 1-2pm CST. The Services will be officiated by Pastor Josh Braddy, of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Madison, MS. Arrangements are by Natchez Trace Funeral Home. Charlie was born in West Point, NY to James “Girault “ Turnage, Jr. and Audrey Hare Turnage. The family then moved to Auburn, Alabama and finally landed in Grenada, MS. He graduated Highschool from Grenada Highschool, where he was on the Golf Team. He graduated from Delta State University with a Bachelor’s & a Master’s degree in Biology. He enlisted in the US Army April 10, 1970. He was a Medical Corpsman & received a M-16 Sharpshooter Badge as well. He proudly served his country until he was Honorably Discharged for medical injury while in service. He worked at the USDA for many years, as a food Inspector, and then as an Industrial Hygienist at the Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center, Jackson, MS. Once retired he was able to resume his love for travel, both in the US and abroad. Charlie loved all his Dogs, especially Birdie, from years past who kept him company on the tennis court late in the evenings. His most recent two dogs, Gabby and Toto, he referred to as his ferocious guard dogs, even though they weighed about 10 pounds apiece. He was an avid golfer and tennis player, as well as an outdoorsman. He loved to kayak, raft and was a certified scuba diver. His favorite times were spent watching sports, especially Golf Tournaments, all Mississippi State University Sports & the Denver Broncos. Charlie is preceded in death by his Parents and his older brother, Larry Turnage of Grenada MS. Charlie is survived by his brothers Lance Turnage, Kerry Turnage (Christi), his sister, Lisa Pitcock (Lamar) his Nieces and Nephews including Kevin Turnage, Brad Turnage, Kate Turnage Bigelow (Eric), Drew Pitcock, (Kelli) Christopher (Julie) Joseph (Marvella), Joshua (Azha) and Hailey Turnage as well as many cousins, great nieces & nephews. The family would like to thank the VA Hospital, & the VA Home for their care in the past few years. We would especially like to thank Compassus Hospice and Pallative Care in Flowood and Hospice Ministries, Ridgeland MS for their loving care in his final days.
