Lt. Col. (Retired) Richard "Dick" Carl Axtell, 84, of Madison, passed away on September 4, 2022 at St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson, MS. Dick was born on October 12, 1937 to Kenneth C. and Eloise Sharp Axtell at home in Madison, MS. He joined the U.S. Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a military pilot who flew both fixed wing and rotary airplanes. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, then worked for the Rankin County School District where he developed and directed the J.R.O.T.C. program. He was a member of Madison United Methodist Church and he enjoyed fishing and wood turning in his free time. Dick is survived by his wife of 62 years, Calista "Kit" Ann Banks Axtell, sons, Rick Axtell and Cliff Axtell; granddaughter, Cali Johnson (Clark), grandson; Spc. Ford Axtell, Trey Axtell (Brittany), Bryce Axtell, and Miles Axtell; great grandchildren, Jaxon Axtell, Aubrey Axtell, Addi Grace Johnson, and Lily Banks Johnson; and brother, Tommy Axtell (Mary Nell). Mr. Axtell was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ken Axtell. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 8, 2022, 9:30 am - 11:00 am at Natchez Trace Funeral Home with the funeral service in the chapel at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in the Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name are suggested to Madison United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
