Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
“Bunny” Susan Shelton, 84, passed away on January 7th, 2023. She was born on April 17th, 1938 to Bettie Hull Eyer and Theodore Foster Willey in Cleveland, Ohio. Born and raised in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, Bunny graduated from Fairview High School and soon after made the move to Mississippi. She graduated from The University of Mississippi where she held several offices in her sorority, Phi Mu; was a honor student and was an enthusiastic Ole Miss fan. She then resided in Lorain, Ohio; Chattanooga, TN; and Memphis, TN before settling in Jackson, MS in 1963. She taught first grade at Jackson Academy for 15 years before earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling from Mississippi College. Bunny spent the next twenty years in solo private practice at Educational Services where she tested and tutored children with learning disabilities. Her goal was to encourage young people and give them techniques to become successful. Bunny was the state president of the Learning Disabilities Association. She published a series of skill sheets for those with learning disabilities and touched the lives of many children and adults. It brought much lasting purpose to her life to be involved in the growth of so many children of all ages. While her two daughters were young, Bunny was blessed to be the unofficial head of the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) program at Christ United Methodist Church. She had wonderful memories of retreats, Sunday nights and inspiring summer choir tours with the Immanuel Singers.
Bunny is survived by her two daughters and husbands, Cindy Shelton Norris , husband Will Norris; Susanne Shelton Barlow, husband Bobby Barlow; and her five grandchildren Hunter Shelton Norris (Rachel Norris); Hayley Anna Norris Canoy (Zach Canoy); Hayes Jackson Norris, Jordan Susanne Walker (Brady Walker); James “Bishop” Barlow and six great grandchildren Lakken, Esther, Alyn, Mason, Ellis, and Blayden.
Bunny is preceded in passing by her father, Theodore Foster Willey; mother, Bettie Hull Eyer; step-father, James Roscoe Eyer and brother, Bruce Theodore Willey.
The visitation will be held on January 10th, 2023 at 10 AM with services following at 11 AM at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison, MS.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Little Light House of Central Mississippi, where her great granddaughter and many other children with learning disabilities attend school or to Know Ministries, her grandson Bishop’s ministry.
