Obituary of Judy McCoy
Please share a memory of Judy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Judy Winfield McCoy
June 10, 1953 - January 26, 2023
Judy is survived and missed by her loving husband Phil McCoy of Madison, Mississippi (married close to 40 years this August); and her son, Daniel Galyean, his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children, Daniel III (18) and Lorelai (14) of Huntsville, Alabama. She will also be forever cherished and remembered by her neighbors (you know who you are), friends (too many to list), and numerous siblings, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Affectionately called "Ju Ju" by the many young children in her life, she enjoyed over 15 years working as a teacher's assistant at Madison Avenue Elementary. She loved her students, teachers, and fellow staff members. She often worked late after school preparing class materials for the following day. A gardener at heart, Judy took great pride in her yard, plants, and home. She loved working outdoors, walking up to 15 miles per day, traveling the world, and decorating for Christmas. She owned at least thirty sets of outdoor Christmas lights - twice as many as her husband, Phil, knew about. Judy's garden and backyard were legendary, and she planted hundreds of flowers in her yard and many of her neighbors' yards as well.
She was a fabulous cook but would humbly deny it. On more than one occasion, after bringing over an expertly crafted dinner she pulled together from seemingly random pantry items, she admonished, “You’d better not let Phil know I made this — it’s going to be awful!”. In good times and bad, Judy dressed and cheered relentlessly for Ole Miss. She and Phil could be found watching football games in person or on the television screaming for her favorite football team every fall. Year-round, Judy's comfort item was her much cherished red and blue, Ole Miss sweatshirt.
Judy did everything with honesty and integrity. She had very strong values and was well-liked by everyone who knew her. Judy had incredible patience with children and made time to help her neighbors, especially those with small kids. She always had something positive to say and went out of her way to show others her love and support. Judy put everyone else’s needs before her own. She never fully understood the impact she made on the lives she touched.
Her legacy will carry on forever reminding us that we control our attitudes regardless of what life throws at us. Judy chose to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service, like Christ modeled for us.
Judy was a longtime member of First Baptist of Madison and spent many years attending service there. Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of Judy's life, which will be held at First Baptist of Madison on Monday, January 30 from 11:30-1:00 PM.
