Obituary of Mary Lullene Slater

Mary Lullene Slater, 90, of Madison, passed away on February 25, 2023, at Parkway Health and Rehab in Canton, MS. She was born on March 4, 1932, to Harvey Thornton and Sally Ann Gilbert Thornton in Attala County, MS. Lullene graduated from West High School in 1949. She then moved to Jackson, MS and began working as an assembler for General Electric in the Jackson Lamp Plant. Jackson is where she met and married Ellis Junior Slater on April 3, 1955. She was a member of the Mississippi Gem Mineral Society for many years and made beautiful jewelry. Lullene was an excellent seamstress, making clothes and quilts for those she loved. Lullene is survived by her sons, Ellis Scott (Vicki) Slater of Madison, MS and John Calvin (Doreen) Slater also of Madison; eight grandchildren, Sally (Chris) Easterling of Magee, MS, Tom (Jonathan) Slater of Nashville, TN, Steven (Mary Esther) Slater of Hernando, MS, Andrew Slater of Dallas, TX, Carter Slater of Oxford, MS, Rhoda (Tim) Palmer of Madison, MS, Nathan (Meredith) Holman of El Paso, TX, and Neilson (Jennifer) Holman of Brandon, MS; and 9 great grandchildren. Lullene was preceded in death by her husband Ellis, grandson Michael John Slater; her parents; sister Elizabeth Thornton Taylor, and brother Allen Thornton. Visitation will be held on Monday February 27, 2023, at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison from 10:00 am until 11:00 a.m. Funeral service to be held in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Slater Family Cemetery near Newhebron, MS at 1:30 pm.
