Maria Grillis Bowman Madison, MS Maria Grillis Bowman, 61, peacefully passed away on August 7, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel and Kyriakey “Kiki” Grillis and brother, Chris Grillis. Maria was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi where she graduated from McCluer Academy and Millsaps College/Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. She worked for the State of Mississippi in Dietetics before becoming a teacher's assistant at Jackson Academy and St. Andrews Episcopal School. Maria was a lifetime, faithful member of Holy Trinity-St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church. Maria loved and celebrated her Greek heritage. She treasured the memories of her many travels to Greece. She particularly adored Patmos, Greece, the island of her parents’ births, where she had hoped to retire. Maria loved animals, especially her dog, Lucy, and cats, Scruples and Vival. Maria is survived by her brother, Dr. Michael Grillis (Dr. Melanie) of Fremont, OH.; nieces, Dr. Nina Grillis (Dr. Jon Maciejewski) of Sylvania, OH., Alexa Grillis of Bloomington, IN., and Kari Grillis East (William) of Clinton, MS.; nephew, Manny Grillis (Dr. Janet) of Arlington, TN.; sister-in-law, Janet Grillis of Madison, MS; great nephews, William and Luke Grillis; significant other Douglas Page and a multitude of friends. The Trisagion will be on Monday, August 14, 2023, at Holy Trinity-St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church, 5725 Pear Orchard Drive in Jackson, MS at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral ceremony to begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland, Ms. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts and donations may be made to: Holy Trinity- St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church 5725 S Pear Orchard Rd., Jackson, MS 39211, or Webster Animal Rescue, 525 Post Oak Rd., Madison, MS. 39110.
