Oh Cindy I’m so sorry for your loss. I was acquainted with Mark in high school and in college but I didn’t know him well. I always thought he was a very nice and fine young man. The video shows what a happy life you had together. I always loved you and hoped for your happiness, and God gave you a wonderful husband and beautiful children and grandchildren. My heart just aches for you and I pray that God will fill your heart with comfort. Seeing you in the video just floods my mind with happy memories of our times together in the group in high school. I pray that your beautiful memories will ease your heart and bring you and your beautiful family closer together. Love, Donna Lum Bowlin

I have known about Mark for years thru my family at Alta Woods...the Churchill's and Becks. After moving here from Cleveland I was aware of this Christian man. He counseled me during a family problem for which I am forever grateful. In our Sunday School Class it was always a Blessing to hear him explain the Word of God. My prayers for Cindy and the whole family. His presence will be missed by all,

I am so sorry for all of us who knew Mr. Coon - but I know he is the happiest he's ever been now! Mark counseled both a family member and myself at different times when we were struggling, to various degrees, whether with our relationship with Jesus or how to walk it out. I will always remember him as one of the sweetest, most kindhearted souls I've ever met, and one of the brightest spots of my time as a member of First Baptist Madison. --Katie Eubanks Ginn

Cindy, I am very sorry for your loss and want you and all of your family to know that you are in my prayers during this sorrowful time.
I met Mark when he and I struggled to master "deep water running" classes at the Madison Health Plex pool. My vision of Mark is a big man with a huge smile and a deep laugh, wearing an over-sized red pool shirt, thrusting his body from below the surface, almost into the air, to reach a pennant hanging above his head and is forever imprinted in my mind. Breathtaking.
Over the years I kept up with Mark through you and I know he was about the work his Maker had set out for him, lovingly helping others.

I was so saddened to hear of Mark's passing. He was such an amazing human being. I will always be thankful that he came out of "retirement" last year, offering words of comfort and encouragement at my Mother's funeral service. I can't help but reflect on those exact same words during this trying time for his family . My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The gospel seeds that Mr. Coon planted are still bearing fruit. His stories and songs live on in the lives of our family and the children we minister to today. “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4). We are so thankful for his love and service to the Lord.

Cindy, Anne and John Mark,
Knowing Mark and the manner in which you were raised; I'm sure you rejoice in his blessings and are comforted in his peaceful passing to be with the Lord. Our hearts say to us "he has gone too soon" Mark would say the timing was perfect.
I can't think of Mark without remembering the time in church when he nearly lost his pants. He turned from the congregation and said "Ya'll just have to give me a minute my britches are about fall off." His sense of humor was spot on. You couldn't be around Mark and help but smile. I'm sure he's entertaining in heaven, too. Everyone he came in contact with had their life enriched; I know I have.
Mark, I know you have God's blessings. See you again one day.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Mark while working at FBC Madison when I was studying at Mississippi College. He and Cindy opened their home for me one summer, and I will always remember Mark in his blue jeans, sitting on the couch with a guitar in hand, playing away. He also introduced me to their homemade sweet pickles, hands down the best pickles I have ever had!
Mark made a significant impact on my life during the short time I got to spend with him. I find comfort in the belief that he has found a special place by Jesus' side and is strumming away on a new guitar.
Mrs. Cindy, I'm so sorry to hear this news. Katelyn and I will be praying for you and the family during this time! We love yall.

Oh how I loved Mark Coon. My heart is broken. I was thirteen when he was born. He lost his mother when he was three. Our younger sister,Bobbie and I did the best we could in helping Daddy raise him. Even from an early age he exhibited the most loving kindest traits. He was our baby!!! When he was fifteen he moved in with Billy and I in Clinton until he met the love of his life, my precious sister-in-law ,Cindy. The rest is history. I have been so blessed to have him in my life these 69 years. He was just a phone call away if anybody needed him ,day or night. I have nothing but sweet memories of him. I,along with many.many others will miss him terribly.but thanks to Jesus, we will see him again one day. Rest in peace my precious brother and best friend. PeggyRoberts

Cindy: It grieves our hearts that brother Mark has left this earth. Such a gentleman, always cheerful, just a great role model. Too early to leave! From Vacation Bible School to St. Catherine’s wheelchair ministry as shown in this summer's photo, he was beloved. The obituary puts it well when saying his heart was always for needy souls. He volunteered for every activity there was. If duty called or danger, he was never lacking there. No matter who, Mark was ready with patient ears and responsive hands. We Piletzes certainly owe him a debt. Especially during 2005-2010 when Chip was “on assignment” in Chicago. During those challenging years, even steadfast Mei-Chi came near her wits end. Those years were the years when Shou-Hsiang came to live in our house and attend our church. Could there have been a more "unique" member of our church than Shou (as he was called)? Yet, he quickly was befriended by Mark. Mark was uniquely able to understand most of his broken English, as well as his bruised soul. Mark also counseled Chip over the phone almost monthly while in Chicago, and Mark held weekly Bible-based chats with Shou. Those sessions were professional yet given to him free-of-charge. Although we tried to pay and lavish praise on Mark whenever we saw him, he remained humble and kept things completely confidential. The name "Mark Coon" thus is held in highest esteem by many you may not know around the country in the Chen and Piletz families. Because our families know that while Shou had professed Christ earlier when he was with us in Ohio, by the time he got to Mississippi his heavenly path was a rocky one. But thanks be to God, who Mark faithfully served, Shou was able to find his heavenly home. And not only are we grateful to Mark but also to the entire FBC Madison family who compassionately helped Shou (as a weaker member of a body is helped by stronger parts). Our thanks must go out – as must those from many – and more will be spoken at the Celebration of Mark's Life this Thursday. We have lost a trusted earthly friend, and you’ve lost your best earthly friend. So sad. But, when we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that’ll be! And Mark is now in the bosom of Abraham and probably being treated to sushi and hearing many thank you's from Shou! Be comforted to know that our prayers are with the Coons during this sad time. Always - Chip & Mei-Chi Piletz

Mark was teaching in my Fellowship Bible Class about a month ago. Midway through a wonderful lesson he stopped, smiled, and finally said, “Did you hear that? That was my wife hitting that high note. I have to stop and listen. I’m so very proud of her!” You could see the love he had for Cindy all over his face.
What a wonderful man he was! I was blessed to know him as all who knew him were. Heaven became far richer when he entered. I am praying for you all.

I’m sorry to hear about mark Cindy and family. Mark was a great counselor. I talked to him a many of times. But like to a memory about the time several of the men went white water rafting. We was on the river and hit a rapid and the boat went straight up. I tried to get balance back but hit another rapid an and I fell over on mark and out in the river he went. All we saw was his head. Ropes were thrown and we got him in the boat. I was embarrassed.

In January 2018, I was asked to leave the cold, dark, rainy Vancouver to spend the weekend in a place I had never been: Mississippi. I was met at the Jackson airport by Mark, and my head started spinning at how friendly he was. Coming from a rigid and terse city, I didn't believe someone like Mark actually could exist. On our way home, we stopped at a gas station, and Mark got out, pumped gas, and proceeded to get in a conversation with the person at the next pump. I couldn't hear everything, but it seemed like they were best friends. When I asked Mark if he knew the guy, he said no.
After feasting on a weekend of hospitality from Mark and Cindy, I returned home to Vancouver and told my wife, "I am not sure if we will ever live in the US again, but Mississippi is the most welcoming place I have ever been!
Two years later, and my family was living in Madison, preparing to plant a church! Mark agreed to meet with me on Mondays in the prayer room to hear my heart and then pray with me. On those Mondays, he had a calming way of hearing my panic, comforting me with Truth, and then going with me to the Lord in prayer.
Mark didn't only represent the hospitality of Mississippi; he was a representative of our Lord and counselor. Whether it was a weekend of relief from the weariness of living in a difficult city or an ongoing rhythm of relief as we prepared to plant a church - the Lord used Mark mightily in his gentleness.
With a heavy heart, I thank God for His servant Mark Coon. My life is different because of the grace God poured into me through him.

Yesterday's sermon at my church was about being compassionate and passionate about following Christ. I can't think of anyone who demonstrated those traits more than Mark. He not only loved the Lord, but he strove to be like Jesus every day, and his love of Jesus shone in his every move.
When my marriage imploded, I thought my world was never going to be the same. It was Mark who not only helped me keep my sanity and walked me through dealing with the pain, but he also brought me back to involvement in church music by getting me involved in playing keyboards for a dinner theater, which subsequently led me back to jobs in the field of church music as an organist. On rare occasions when I revisited FBC, he always asked about any music projects I was involved in and was always interested in what was transpiring in my life. When my daughter got married at FBC, it was Mark who performed their marriage ceremony. He always wanted to know how Jennifer and Clay were. When Jennifer lost a baby, Mark contacted her, prayed with her, and let her know that he would be praying for her. When a son was born to Jennifer and Clay exactly one year later, Mark was one of the most excited to hear the news, and at a Christmas party later that year was ecstatic that Jennifer handed Charlie to him while she was busy. Mark took that baby like he was one of his own grandchildren and I don't know who had the most fun: Charlie or Mark.
Mark, I know that I am only one of the few who are heartbroken right now. I will miss your smile, your loving hugs, and always, your genuine caring and compassion. I know without a doubt that the pronouncement of "Well done, good and faithful servant" rang throughout Heaven and I'll take comfort in the fact that without a doubt I will see you again one day. Until then, my friend!

Mark was everything that others have mentioned. He was so many things to so many people. I especially remember numerous times he came to Hillcrest Christian School for assembly programs. We invited him every year. He knew just how to communicate with those children. As director of SMACK, we invited he and John Mark to lead our worship services at Blue Mountain University. I loved how the two of them played off each other and one brought out the best of the other. Mark has to be one of the best people I’ve ever known. He loved everyone, but his family were absolutely the loves of his life. He was always talking and bragging about Cindy and his kids and when his grandchildren came along he was over the moon! In the years that I worked with him I saw his compassion and love for people on a daily basis. He loved working with the senior adults, planning special programs for them, planning great trips for them and getting them involved in ministry. They would take trips to help with Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoe Boxes and were bell ringers for the Salvation Army during the Christmas Holidays. He spent many hours counseling people in a way only he could. He was the best “listener” ever and helped me through some difficult times with his love and compassion.
He and I haven’t worked together in years now but I still miss him bringing boiled peanuts to the office every fall!
