Mae Charles Strickland, age 89, of Madison, MS passed away November 1, 2023 at Merit Health Hospital in Madison with her son, Guy, by her side. Mae C. or Mae, as she was known by her family and friends, was born on December 22, 1933 in Holmes County, MS near West, MS. She was the oldest of five children. Her parents were David Lorren Green and Bennie Mae Green, of West, MS. Growing up in West, MS, she attended to all of the schools in the area: Centerville Elementary School, Centerville Middle School, and West High School, where she graduated as Valedictorian of her class of 1952. She received several honors including Business Manager of the Annual Staff, Best Dressed, and other honors. After high school graduation, she was employed with South Central Bell Telephone Company in Jackson, MS for about six years. While employed there, she became best friends with her fellow employee, Mary Strickland. Mary introduced her brother-in-law, Buddy Strickland, to Mae during that time. Then, on November 10, 1957, Mae and Buddy were married at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in West, MS. They had one child, Guy, in August, 1958. Once Mae finished her employment with South Central Bell Telephone Company in 1962, she became a homemaker to raise their son, Guy, until 1975 where she began a career in the insurance related field. She was employed with Service Review, Inc. in Jackson, MS for four years. Then in 1979, she was employed with Hooper Holmes, Inc. Portamedic, Jackson, MS until 1997. Then, in 2001, she was employed with ExamOne Labone, Ridgeland, MS until 2009. She retired in 2009. Mae C. Strickland is a Christian and had attended Mount Vernon Baptist Church, West, MS; Parkway Baptist Church (formerly Jackson, MS); Briarwood Drive Baptist Church, Jackson, MS; and other churches in the Jackson and Madison areas. She had various hobbies, including sewing, reading, cooking, gardening, and attending country music concerts. Mae is survived by her only son, Guy L. Strickland of Madison, MS; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Jean and James C. Bowen of Kingwood, TX; sisters-in-law, Betty and Patty Green of West, MS and Mary Strickland of Shreveport, LA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. (Buddy) Strickland of 39 years; parents, David Lorren and Bennie Mae Green; brothers, William Douglas Green, L. David Green, John Denton (Ann) Green; and brother-in-law, Clarence E. (Sonnye) Strickland, Jr. We want to send a very special Thank You to the staff at Highland Home Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home, Ridgeland, MS for their care, love, and support. We also want to send a very special Thank You to Covenant Caregivers, Madison, MS for their care, love, and support. A special Thank You is also being sent to many sitters who have helped the Strickland Family during that time. These sitters include, but are not limited to, Marquise Wilson, Kiki Henderson, Diania Barton, Jannie Booker, and Linda Washington. For those who would like to pay their respects to Mrs. Strickland, please stay tuned in as there will be a Visitation and Celebration of Life Service scheduled after the New Year to commemorate the life of Mae C. Strickland.
