Obituary of Charles Craig Amick

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Craig Amick, a long-time resident of Vicksburg, passed away on January 2, 2024, at the age of 74. Craig was born into a military family on February 23, 1949, in San Diego, California. He was the son of William Clyde Amick, Jr. and Margaret Funk Amick. As part of a military family, Craig’s childhood and early adolescence were spent in numerous states and overseas. In 1964, Craig graduated middle school from St. Mary's School in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated high school in 1968 from George C. Marshall Regional High School in Ankara, Turkey. He completed numerous college courses before following in his father’s footsteps by enlisting with the U.S. Navy in 1973. He dedicated 6 years of his life to the service, including serving in the Vietnam War, and was stationed aboard the USS Flying Fish nuclear submarine. He had a vast collection of stories from his time in the service, including being deployed under the seas for a 3-month stint. He took the knowledge gained from working on submarines and went on to work as an electrical engineer at various power plants. His work took him across the south, including Arkansas Nuclear One and Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, which brought him to Vicksburg nearly forty years ago. Traveling abroad was a prominent part of Craig’s life, first with his brother and then several trips with his children and sister. Costa Rica, Panama, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, and Singapore were just a few of the stamps on his impressive passport collection. When stateside, Arkansas was one of the places where he put down roots and loved to return for the scenic landscapes, natural springs, and campgrounds. Traveling and camping became a favorite summer pastime and core memories as his children grew up visiting and exploring throughout the Ozarks and the Delta. He enjoyed being in the sun and the outdoors, so it was no surprise that accompanying his children and grandchildren to the beach each summer quickly became his favorite vacation destination. In his down time, he spent many hours playing cards with friends at the Moose Lodge in Vicksburg, enjoyed listening to his extensive music collection at an amplified volume, and was an avid reader and book collector. Craig is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Amick. He is survived by his children, Eric Amick (Rebekka), Louann Robertson (Daniel), and Christen Jones (Rob), and his beloved grandchildren; Caleb and Jonah Amick, Caitlyn, Kinley, Cara, and Colby Robertson, and Layton and Hollis Jones; and sister, Cathy Amick, sister-in-law Judi and niece Becki (Stan) French. Visitation will be Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison, MS from 2:00pm until 3:00pm with a graveside service and Military Honors to follow in Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Amick's name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org or Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, www.umc.edu
