Please share a memory of Jackie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jackie Herron Gilmer, a beacon of warmth and generosity, passed away peacefully at home in Madison, MS on May 30, 2024 following a brief illness. Born on April 5, 1938, in Bristol, TN-VA, Jackie's life was marked by a profound commitment to community service, education, and the arts. With a career that spanned various roles—from teaching young children in Macon, GA, to orchestrating major alumni events at Emory University in Atlanta—Jackie left an indelible mark on every community she touched. At Emory, she was known for her meticulous organization of alumni activities and for her pivotal role in the expansion of alumni programs. Her grace and dedication made her a beloved figure on campus and beyond. Before her distinguished tenure at Emory, Jackie served as the Executive Director of the Jackson, TN Arts Council, where she significantly increased funding and support for the arts. She was an advocate for cultural enrichment, believing in the power of arts to transform societies. Jackie's legacy also includes her commitment to children's education and welfare. Whether teaching first grade in Macon, GA, or leading church children's ministries, she nurtured young minds with patience and love. In her personal life, Jackie was a devoted wife to Dr. Harry Gilmer and a loving mother to Jennifer Lynne and Kelley Elizabeth. She and Harry were constant companions for 70 years. Her home was a hub of warmth and hospitality, reflecting her spirit of generosity. Jackie leaves behind her husband Harry, daughters Jennifer Carter (Carl) of Madison, MS, Kelley Whitaker (Scot) of Jackson, TN, and a brother, John Herron (Donna) of Hartwell, GA, along with three grandchildren, Lauren Whitaker (Courtney) Houston, TX, Emily Whitaker Privitt (Dale) Gibson, TN, Mia Grace Carter, Jackson, MS as well as nieces and nephews and a great-grandchild on the way. She graduated with high honors from Wesleyan College and later took graduate courses at Mercer University. Her educational experience at Wesleyan encouraged her to continue and broaden her leadership role among women. This was witnessed by her becoming the president of numerous women’s groups. With her husband, she became a world traveler broadening her cultural perspectives. Beyond her professional and family life, Jackie was actively involved in numerous volunteer roles. She served on boards for charities, schools, and church groups, consistently striving to make a difference in the lives of others. Her leadership in community projects and her tireless advocacy for educational and cultural initiatives are just a few aspects of her remarkable legacy. As we remember Jackie, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and passion. Her contributions will continue to inspire those who knew her and many who will benefit from her efforts. Jackie Herron Gilmer's memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of her family, friends, and all the lives she touched.
