When Chris and I sat down to remember M.D. we both said the words joy, smiles, and big hugs come to mind. There is no doubt with these traits that describe his essence that he loved people. Without even knowing you, he would give you a sense of love and acceptance in his presence. We are thankful that we did get to know him for a season of our life.
When he accepted the call as pastor of FPC Gulfport and brought his family to our church I was about 12 years old. I loved him right away because he had so many daughters. I thought, “Yay! Friends!” Little did I know that one of those daughters (Shannon) would become my sister-in-law one day. What a blessing she is to our entire family!
When I took a communicants class at age 13 before joining the church he was the teacher. I thought for sure when I bombarded him with all my questions and doubts he would be shocked and uncomfortable and possibly deny me membership. However, he just smiled and pulled out the Scriptures and found answers for each one. His confidence in the Word of God spurred me on in my young faith, though I’m just realizing it now as I write. His preaching came alive to me after this and I began to truly listen to sermons on Sundays and hunger for more.
M.D. also married Chris and I back in May, 2000. When we met with him for our first marriage counseling session I think he was even happier about or marriage than we were! His joy for us during the entire ceremony brought a loving presence I will never forget.
Joy, smiles, and big hugs; a taste of the delights of being with our Father in Heaven. I have no doubt he is receiving the joy of the Father today. Our sincere condolences go out to all the family and all others who loved him. We thank God for his life and ministry on earth and for his eternal life in Heaven! We are sorrowful yet rejoicing along with you.
Sincerely,
Chris and Heather Carter

words can't express how broken my heart is with the loss of my brother in law of 53 years. I was 12 when he entered my life and he was the sweetest man I ever knew. He was funny, he was your friend, and he was your confidant all in one. He will be miss by so many as he had the opportunity to touch so many peoples lives and hearts while on earth. God has gained a helper for sure. Until we meet again D, I will always love you. Wanda Arrington Davis

Our Grace Chapel Presbyterian family was so blessed to have had MD and Linda and their family join us for worship these past couple of years. Although our time with MD was too short, he brought so much joy and wisdom to our fellowship. He gave great hugs and always lived his faith out loud, sharing that assurance that God is so good at all times. He will be greatly missed and we look forward to seeing him again.

I was a member of the congregation at Edwards Memorial in Cayce SC. I remember sitting in church the day MD announced he would be a father again (to Ryan). He quoted “Happy is the man who has his quiver full”!
I remember the pure joy on his face whenever he would speak of our promise of eternal life. He was a man of true faith and always gave me hope. I have never known another person who was as authentic and faithful. God has received his servant and it is well.

Bethany once put together a beautiful book for Pastor Connor's retirement. I looked back on what I said at that time, since I am at a loss for words now. The words are as true today as they were years ago:
How can I even describe how Pastor and Mrs. Connor have impacted my life? They had so much influence on my childhood, teens, and young adult years. They raised amazing children that I am proud to call my friends.
So many memories involve him and his beautiful family. The hugs that could make the world right again. His larger-than-life laugh. The lessons that I needed to learn. The moral compass when our shenanigans went too far.
I will be forever grateful to God for allowing me to meet him and his beautiful family. I think of all of you often and always with a smile.
Sending all of my love,
Adriana

MD was a high school classmate of Wayne Augustine. They graduated from BC High School and remained friends for life. In 1987 MD married Wayne and I (Valerie) in Lexington SC. He and Wayne kept in touch and talked when they could. Rest in Peace MD.

Dear Linda,
As we learned of MD's passing our hearts couldn't help but smile through tears! You couldn't think of MD and not smile. What a light he was in this world for the cause of Christ! He LOVED everyone and had that special way of showing it to all he met. There aren't many people in this world you meet that love so unconditionally! Our last visit with you and MD was at Dad's funeral in VA. Even at a sad time in our lives, he brought joy and laughter to us all. We know your family will miss him terribly, but remember it's only for a little while. The hope in Jesus that MD preached until his last day is the hope that guarantees we WILL SEE HIM AGAIN! Love and prayers to you and your family. Love, Donna & Paul Wade

Countless memories of M.D. as he was my pastor before he was my brother in law. None surpass the September day in 1992 when he married me to his brother Clay with Linda by our side. We were the only ones present. Much love with condolences from me and your niece/nephew Maggie and Rory Connor.

Linda I am so sorry to hear about MD's passing.
Such a wonderful man in so many ways!!
So many memories of hearing him and daddy's stories in SC sitting in Irene's kitchen and living room. Being there with family and the amount of laughter we have had together will always be special memories I will never forget. I will be thinking and praying for comfort for your family because I know he will be missed so much. However I am sure he is smiling down on all of us and will be entertaining everyone in heaven. Some how I think that gift is always with us.
Love, Lori Rice Hope
