Abbie Kathleen Dupont – Eulogy Abbie Richard Dupont 1/11/23
Today my family and I said goodbye to the original Abbie Dupont. I could not have asked to have a better namesake to look up to in life. I will deeply cherish all of our memories, the time I spent living with you, watching you win in Rummy, and all of your stories. You truly were a wonderful grandfather and will always be my Poppie.
There’s a song lyric that I keep thinking of as I’ve been processing my grandfather’s death. The lyric is “but your death, it won’t happen to you, it happens to your family and friends.” I think that frame of mind really embodies why we are all gathered here today. Abbie R. Dupont passed away peaceful in his sleep surrounded by his family who loved him more than life itself. So I wanted to take some time today to reflect on the idea that Abbie is peacefully in heaven no longer in any pain watching over us and that we are gathered here today as his family and friends to celebrate his life and all the ways he brought happiness and joy into ours.
Abbie would be so touched by all the people who have gathered here today to celebrate him. I was lucky enough to be named after such an accomplished, witty and thoughtful individual but to me he wasn’t Abbie, he was just Poppie. And today I wanted to share with you some of the brightest parts and funniest parts of Poppie’s life. Poppie was extremely quiet but was unbelievably smart. He was so humble that you’d never realize everything he accomplished. First he was a husband to my grandma Gerry for almost 65 yesrs. He was a father to three boys, Kevin, Michael and Mark. He was a grandfather to myself, Sammie, David, Connor and Zachary. But he was also an aeronautical engineer, a navigator in the Air Force, a Col, and a veteran.
Some of my favorite past times were hearing stories Poppie told us about his life but also watching him interact with my family through his intelligence and jokes.
He used to tutor my sister in math and was so patient with her and I know that’s time and memories she will cherish forever.
He recently made sure to leave my 16 year old brother with the parting gifts he though every young man should have, a pocket knife, and a wallet.
He was an absolute card shark in Rummy and was known around the household as the great Watash. Granted he and grandma did always sit next to each playing cards, and she coincidently always seemed to lay day the card he always needed.
He spent his last moments awake with his oldest son Kevin watching his favorite thing, Football. And I know for a fact Poppie definitely could not have passed before Watching his football games because he refused to miss Football and all the scheduling of dinners, lunches and family outings needed to cater to that.
However, My personal favorites from his stories were hearing about his time of service and his funny anecdotes about situations he experienced. Because it never mattered how odd or dire the situation was, he always spun it in a way that it was funny or lighthearted.
So, on that note, I’d like to share some of those stories because I think he’d want everyone to have some positive and funny moments to reflect on.
One of the more recent ones he told me was about his time as a young child in Louisiana. In his home they had turned the fair grounds into a POW camp for WWII prisoners we captured, For some this may have seemed daunting or like a scary thing to have in your town especially as a child. However, not for Poppie. Instead he let me know that for fun he used to go sit by the fence and hangout with/chat up the POWs like you would a person on the street.
Another instance he informed my whole family that green berets were absolutely crazy. His rationale for this was that when they were called for leave, one of the green berets he knew had a pet monkey. When the man was told he could bring the monkey with him, he simply bit his head off so he could board the plane. Poppie told this story to us very matter of factly without any shock as if it was a normal occurrence.
Family Favorite about the dead people
I can’t forget his incredible sense of humor and that he was known for his one liners and all his jokes. He always let me know that when grandma passed he was going to trade her in for two forties. He always made dirty jokes with my mom that flew right over grandmas head. My personal favorite was the time Poppie was in a wheelchair on the Disney Cruise. He and my father and sister boarded the elevator with a young family where the kids were probably under the age of 5. Poppie felt this was an excellent time to ask the children “Do you know why I’m in this wheelchair?” To which everyone looked at him expectantly and a little confused. He then informed them that is was because he was pregnant! The kids looked at their parents shocked and not understanding but Poppie was beside himself with how funny he was.
Lastly, funny stories aside, I’d like to add a few final words on my Poppie’s character. My grandfather was the type of person who always made sure we were taken care and thoughtful when it came to his family. I’m not sure if many of you know this but my grandma has the most beautiful jewelry collection curated from my grandfather from around the world. During his time in the air force, everytime he traveled, he always brought her home a piece of jewelry. And I know for her from all the stories she’s told me, each piece has a special meaning and a memory attached to it. Anytime a family member had a car issue he was always the first to volunteer his vehicle to make sure we were safe and could get around.
My grandfather always made sure to take us to lunch any chance he got and it was always Papitos. He loved Mexican food and always wanted to go with us. So in closing, everyone go out and have a meal with their family and enjoy the time you get with them for Poppie. I know I’ll miss hearing him say “where you going Rambling Rose?”

Mr. Dupont was one of the sweetest and most interesting men I have ever known. My family and I met him at church, along with Geraldine, and we have "adopted" them into our family. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Gerry,
How I wish I could be with you now to share my love for you and your family. I still carry with me the comfort you and Abbie brought me when Bo had his heart attack. And years later, you and Abbie arrived in Alpharetta when he passed almost as the children did. Your support meant so much.
I am recuperating from Covid myself and unable to travel. But know that I am with you in heart and celebrating the beautiful life that led us to love and respect Abbie as friend, father of a loving family, and devoted husband.
With love and sympathy, Lollie
